Overview:
Caladiums are grown primarily for their vibrant, heart-shaped leaves in shades of red, pink, green, and white. These tropical plants are well-suited to East Texas gardens if given proper care, especially in shaded areas where many flowering plants struggle. Though most gardeners grow them as annuals, they are tuberous perennials that can be saved and replanted yearly.
Light Requirements
Caladiums thrive in partial to full shade, making them ideal for brightening darker corners of the garden. While newer sun-tolerant varieties exist, afternoon shade is still preferred in East Texas to avoid leaf burn during the peak summer heat.
Soil & Planting
They prefer rich, well-draining soil high in organic matter. Raised beds or pots with good drainage are recommended. If planting from tubers, then incorporate compost or peat moss at planting time. Space tubers 8–12 inches apart, about 1–2 inches deep, with the knobby side facing up.
Watering
Caladiums need consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Water whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid soggy conditions that may lead to rot. Mulching helps maintain even moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) to encourage strong foliage and tuber development.
Seasonal Care
In East Texas, treat caladiums as tender perennials. When foliage begins to die back in fall, cut back the leaves and lift the tubers before the first frost. Store in a dry, cool place in peat moss or paper bags until spring.
