Every year on May 29th, gardeners and environmentalists across the country recognize Learn About Composting Day—a day dedicated to educating people about the importance of composting and encouraging sustainable practices at home and in the garden. Whether you are a seasoned grower or just starting out, this day is a reminder that healthy soil and thriving plants begin with what we put back into the earth.
Composting is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce waste, enrich your garden, and give back to the land. It is nature’s original recycling system, and it works wonders at no extra cost to us.
The Power of Compost
Compost improves soil structure, supports beneficial microbes, and adds essential nutrients that your plants need to thrive. It is especially important here in East Texas, where soil can often be found as a nutrient deprived sand, or a hardened red clay. Our soil benefits greatly from organic amendments to improve drainage and fertility.
At Gen1 Greenhouse, I have seen firsthand the difference that rich, living compost can make. That is why I use a nitrogen-rich grape skin compost, made right here in Nacogdoches using organic material from local sources. This blend has been specially formulated for ornamental plants, vegetable gardens, and container plantings—and I am proud to offer it directly to the community.
