Overview

In East Texas, petunias can perform extremely well during spring and again during the cooler weather of fall. The intense heat of midsummer can cause some cultivars to decline, especially when they are grown in containers that dry rapidly.
Light Requirements
Petunias prefer full sun.
A location receiving approximately six or more hours of direct sunlight generally produces the greatest number of flowers and the strongest growth.
Some afternoon protection can be beneficial during periods of extreme East Texas heat, particularly for container plants.
Soil & Planting

Heavy East Texas clay should be improved when necessary with organic matter and appropriate bed preparation. Containers should always contain a well-drained potting mix rather than garden soil.
When planting petunias, do not bury the stem excessively. Set the plants at approximately the same depth at which they were growing in their containers.
Watering
Petunias need regular moisture, especially while flowering heavily.
Water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry, then allow excess water to drain away. Do not keep the root zone constantly saturated.
Hanging baskets and small containers can dry out rapidly in East Texas. During hot weather, check them frequently.
Fertilizing
